I've been busy with printmaking the last couple of weeks; here are some pieces I did at Flatbed Press in Austin today.  It's a lengthy process. First the original art is created (in this case, a drawing done with layers of ink wash).  The art is scanned and made into a positive transparency. This is a monotype done using the subtractive method (inking a plate, then removing ink with Q-tips, brushes, etc. to create a drawing.  I usually start with a rough idea for the subject, but the fun of monotypes is letting the ink patterns suggest form and shape.

This one has everything I like: interesting shapes, lots of light, and a figure.
There were overhead windows/skylights throwing beautiful shadows on the skating rink. Combined with the skater's own shadow, it made for some interesting design possibilities.

I should have left my dark background in, but I decided to remove it (bad decision). Most of the time spent on these studies is in the preparation-trying to make accurate color observations and mixing the range of  values/chromas of various hues I'll need.
